LTL freight doesn’t fill an entire trailer, but that doesn’t mean it needs to wait for a full load. Cross-docking allows smaller shipments to be combined with compatible loads already en route to the same market or destination.
For shippers, the advantage comes down to trailer utilization. Combining compatible LTL shipments makes better use of available capacity and provides a practical path forward for loads that don’t justify a dedicated truck. The individual shipments remain separate and accounted for while sharing outbound trailer space.
What Is Transloading?
Transloading is the transfer of goods from one mode of transportation or type of equipment to another during the shipping journey. It’s commonly used when a single mode of transportation isn’t practical for moving a load from its origin to its final destination.
For example, cargo traveling a long distance by rail still needs a way to reach a location without rail access. At a transloading facility, the shipment is moved from the railcar to a truck for the final leg.
The process bridges these different stages of transportation through three main steps: inbound unloading, cargo transfer, and reloading.
Inbound Unloading
Inbound unloading begins when the shipment arrives at the transloading facility via truck, rail, container, or another mode of transportation. The receiving team checks the shipping documentation and confirms that the load is ready for transfer before unloading begins.
The equipment used depends on the cargo. Palletized goods are typically handled with forklifts or pallet jacks, while bulk, oversized, or specialized loads require equipment suited to their size and configuration.

Cargo Transfer
With the inbound equipment cleared, the focus shifts to preparing the cargo transfer. Crews keep individual shipments accounted for and adjust freight as needed for the receiving equipment.
This step looks different from one load to the next. Pallets remain unitized when possible, while loose, oversized, or differently configured cargo requires handling suited to its weight, dimensions, and packaging. Any necessary staging is kept organized so each piece stays with the correct shipment.

Reloading for the Next Transport Mode
Reloading isn’t simply a matter of putting the cargo onto the next vehicle. The load needs to match the requirements of the equipment carrying it and remain stable throughout the next portion of transportation.
Crews consider weight distribution, cargo placement, and load securement when arranging the shipment. For example, weight must be distributed appropriately across a trailer rather than concentrated in one area. Pallets and other cargo also need to be positioned and secured to limit movement in transit.
Before departure, the load is checked against its shipping documents. This final verification helps ensure that the correct cargo loads onto the correct equipment.
When Does Freight Need To Be Transloaded?
Several factors determine when transloading makes sense, including the shipment’s route, available transportation infrastructure, and cargo requirements.
Certain shipping scenarios make the need for a transfer especially clear, such as:
- Rail shipments continuing by road: Rail handles the long-distance portion, while a truck completes the route to a destination without direct rail access.
- Imported cargo leaving a port: Goods are removed from an ocean container and transferred to equipment suited for inland transportation.
- Oversized or heavy cargo changing equipment: Large loads are moved onto equipment designed for the dimensions, weight, or requirements of the next leg.
- Bulk materials changing transport: Loose commodities are transferred between equipment designed for different stages of the route.
